It was a nice sunny morning with calm seas and super warm water that the diving community came together for the environment and cleaned up the Gulf of Mexico surrounding the Naples Pier. There were so many divers from the two dive shops ,Scuba Outfitters and Scuba Adventures. It was great to see the many divers from the Scuba Outfitters diving community , as well a good representation from the Scuba Outfitters Diving Club.
The divers on the topside dropped the buckets for the divers. It was fun to see the interesting treasures and debris coming up from the water. Lots of fishing lines, lures, hooks, an interesting bracelet... someone was saving all of the pretty fishing lures and lined them up on the bench. Then, a diver appeared on the surface....what did he have? I think it was a stone crab trap, the Environmental Specialists were very interested in it..."lets examine it and get some pictures." When they turned over the bottom of the trap, they found several small crabs, very tiny lobsters and shrimp and and two interesting oriental mussels. We made sure that the baby crustaceans were returned to the ocean, but they explained that the two mussels were not indigenous to the Gulf and had to be thrown away....
It was a great service project for the environment that all the divers embraced. Everyone had a good time in helping to clean up the waters around the Naples Pier, as well as diving fun, networking and making new diving friends.
Naples Pier was buffed and cleaned and ready to go for another year of fishermen and all who enjoy the pier....downunder... she's looking fabulous!
